Some of My Likes and Dislikes:

Likes

  • The English language.
  • Living in a country with some form of statutory gun-control.
  • Scripting langauges - they provide memory management, and the code is generally interpreted not compiled so things can be developed quickly.

Dislikes

  • Programming languages that are syntaxed like Modula-2 and Pascal.
  • Religious zealots.
  • Strangers who disturb me on the train or at home, & try to sell me something or indoctrinate me into their religion.
  • Web sites that open unsolicited popup windows - GeoCities anyone?
  • Sites that use Javascript instead of normal web links.
  • Water-saving shower-heads - standing under a trickle of water struggling to wash suds away is not my idea of fun.
  • Online shopping sites that are structured so as to make it hard to find international shipping prices, or even worse, won’t give you pricing on international shipping until after credit card details have been entered.
  • Computer vendors shafting their customers. The primary offender for me in this category is Gravis. I got burnt by this company & their promises of drivers which never materialised. Consequently, I will never buy another one of their products, and I also learnt the first rule of purchasing computer hardware the hard way - if you're not a masochist, always only buy hardware which has already become mainstream, and for which you can independently verify that working drivers already exist for all operating systems that you're ever likely to use.
